EP review: SPC ECO “Don’t Say”

SPC ECO - “Don’t Say” (out on XD March 10th, 2012)

The latest release by former Curve musician Dean Garcia (bass, drums, guitars,  programming), his daughter Rose Berlin (vocals, lyrics) and guitarist Joey Levenson aka SPC ECO follows the band’s previous footsteps (two albums and several EP’s) and once more showcases a varied face with regard to the atmosphere of the five songs. It’s mystic, intense, dreamy, powerful, melancholic, soothing, deep. The trio (and guest musicians, Perry Pelonero and Brent Martino of Skylight amongst others) create an exciting interaction of electronic soundscapes and rock textures as well as gentle and vibrant moments. The music’s floating in kind of an epic, airy way and has been colored with shimmering sound details, spicy riffs, hypnotic and quite groovy rhythms as well as Rose’s vocals that are as diverse as the whole vibe: haunting, sweet, thoughtful, angelic, sexy. Think of a collaboration between Delerium, Cocteau Twins, Collide, DarkDriveClinic and – of course – Curve, that might give you an idea of SPC ECO’s stylistically broad character. ‘Nuff said, I recommend you head over to the group’s Bandcamp home and dive into this equally relaxing and exciting music. 8/10
