Counterfeit i - “A Glimpse, An Eclipse” (out on Bit Riot Records March 27th, 2012)
There haven’t been many industrial rock/metal albums in the recent past I’d connect with excitement, thrill, freshness. There were some decent and solid releases, yes, but did they bring something special to the table? Rarely. I was positively surprised when I listened to this band’s album. Based in Chicago, Counterfeit i have one album (“Circuitry”, 2009) and two EP’s (“Transistor” & “Search Party”, both 2010) under their roof. On the second longplay adventure, “A Glimpse, An Eclipse”, the listeners are brought onto a trip that is filled with unpredictable moments. Derek Allen (guitars, vocals, keys, programming), who started Counterfeit i in 2008 and is the brain behind this quite eclectic music attack, mixes several colors taken from genres such as electronica, industrial, noise, rock and metal. He loves to juggle with unforseeable, dynamic breaks, rhythms, song structures and melody arrows. One moment you’re caught in introverted thoughtfulness, accompanied by emotional piano spots or acoustic guitar, the next moment a loud, dissonant rhythm interval in connection with forceful riff walls and noise outbursts conquer your speakers. This album is a rush of adrenaline, a progressive blend for people who love to discover music outside the box. It’s not an easy ride and requires some time, but it’s well worth it. Listen loud! 8/10
